Ammut (암무트) was a prisoner of the Pyramid Field and a former associate of Tarnak, the Monarch of the Iron Body.

Appearance[]

Ammut is a muscular reptilian humanoid who is about three times larger than the average adult human and has the head of a crocodile. He has very wrinkled skin and long black claws, and walks with a distinctive hunch. In his first appearance, he was wearing tattered greenish-gray pants and a tattered gray hood over his head with bandages over his eyes.

Personality[]

Ammut is an aggressive and prideful individual with a great passion for battle. Due to his immense power, he has little respect for those who lack the strength to challenge or impress him, and slaughters them without mercy. He does, however, make an exception for those who can understand monster tongue and will always leave them alive long enough to have a civil conversation, as shown when he promised to spare Suho's life as long as the latter answered all of his questions about the war between the Monarchs.[1]

Having spent his days tortured by Tarnak, Ammut grew to abhors goblins and desired freedom. He is also rather childlike.

History[]

Web Novel

Eons ago, Ammut took Tarnak under his tutelage and taught him all of his techniques, eventually allowing Tarnak to become as strong as Ammut himself and become the Monarch of the Iron Body. However, despite his relationship with Tarnak, he did not participate in the war between the Rulers and the Monarchs, and only watched them fight each other from the sidelines.

For a time Ammut wondered of whether or not if it was really his tutelage that allowed Tarnak to rise to become the Monarch of the Iron Body or if Tarnak was truly a special case. In order to see if this was true, Ammut attempted to train other goblins to rise in power like Tarnak. Though none survived his training. Due to his failures, Tarnak began to doubt his skill as a teacher and as he was already approaching old age, he feared he may never know if there was any merit to his Iron Body Technique.

At some point before the end of the war, Ammut made a deal with Kandiaru in exchange for immortality. To hold up his end of the deal, he allowed Kandiaru to seal him inside a gigantic pyramid, where he would remain for centuries to come.[2]

Pyramid Arc

As an indirect effect of the Apostles' arrival in the human world, the pyramid that Ammut was imprisoned in emerged in Egypt as a field-type dungeon and became the target of several major guilds who wanted to obtain the dungeon's riches for themselves, including the Scavenger Guild and the Asura Guild. When a group of hunters from the Scavenger Guild reached the boss room where Ammut was chained up, he easily broke free of his restraints and rose up to fight them.

Manhwa

Ammut was originally a normal alligator-like demon who was kidnapped and tortured eons ago as a joint effort between Tarnak and Kandiaru who repeatedly broke and healed him, where over time the pain became so much that he gouged out his own eyes and came to enjoy the sensation of pain. Despite the fact that one of his creators was an active participant in the war between the Rulers and the Monarchs, Ammut never took sides in the conflict and merely watched the two armies fight each other from the sidelines.

At some point before the end of the war, Ammut was abandoned by his creators and imprisoned inside a gigantic pyramid for unknown reasons, causing him to develop an immense grudge against them.

Upon realizing that the hunters couldn't understand what he was saying, Ammut savagely attacked them, killing every hunter in the room except for Randolph. Randolph attempted to defend himself by bashing his war hammer into Ammut's torso, but much to his shock, his attack didn't even make Ammut budge. Ammut then punched Randolph in response, blowing a large hole through the latter's torso and killing him instantly. Disappointed as how easily he was able to "break" Randolph, Ammut decided to head outside to see if there was anyone strong enough out there to challenge him.[3]

Upon leaving his prison, Ammut immediately ran into Esil and Suho, and was surprised to find out that they could speak monster tongue and understand what he was saying. Despite swatting Suho aside for attacking him, Ammut promised not to kill either of them as long as they could answer his questions and took a moment to kill all the other monsters in the dungeon so that they could talk in peace. He then asked Esil if the war between Monarchs was over and who the victor was in the end, but when Esil didn't give him an answer, he became irritated and moved to kill her.

However, before Ammut could crush her with his foot, Suho healed himself with Status Recovery and told him that the war ended a while back when the Shadow Monarch slaughters the other Monarchs all by himself. Stunned to find out that he'd missed his chance to witness the last phase of the war, Ammut noted that if what Suho told him was true, then Tarnak, the Monarch of the Iron Body and his former associate, must have been killed during the war too.[4] To Suho's surprise, once he confirmed that Tarnak was truly dead, Ammut started laughing sadistically and declared that he was grateful to the Shadow Monarch for killing Tarnak while he was trapped inside this pyramid.

However, as he was talking with Suho, Ammut accidentally crossed the pyramid's boundary, causing a massive amount of chains to bind his limbs and yank him back into the room that he was originally imprisoned in. Suho then followed Ammut into the pyramid and revealed that he intended to free him from his prison by killing the dungeon boss (which would then cause the pyramid to collapse) on the condition that Ammut would listen to a request that he had in mind. Finding the idea of destroying the pyramid entertaining and eager to be free of his prison, Ammut quickly agreed to Suho's offer.[5]

Ammut waited with Beru as Suho went to kill the boss. Suho managed to succeed, and the dungeon began to collapse, allowing Ammut's chains to come lose from the foundations . However Ammut's freedom was not so easily gained as the weights attached to the chains began to attack him, an apparent failsafe left behind by Tarnak. Suho and Esil though managed to ward the enchanted weights away long enough for Suho to create a Gate to the Shadow Dungeon, there Ammut was pushed inside, separated by the attacking chains weights once the dimensional portal closed. Upon being brought to the serene dimension, Ammut finally found the peace he sought.

Sometime after obtaining his freedom, Ammut slaughtered every goblin in the forest to quell the burning hatred for being associated with Tarnak. When confronted with this, Ammut claimed he broke no part of his promise with Suho and decided to train the young Hunter as an alternative. Suho would become flabbergasted at the idea but Ammut would reveal he would have to carry him while doing 100push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10km run, After undergoing the harsh training, Ammut complimented Suho for completing the regiment and pointed out he is the strongest human he's facing.

Abilities[]

As a former associate of Tarnak, Ammit is an immensely powerful individual being an S-Rank monster, something that proves his power and the fact that he is considered the successor to the Monarch of the Iron Body. Ammut can use his chains as improvised whip-like weapons to cut into pieces B-Rank monsters and hunters.

  • Master Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Ammut is well versed in hand-to-hand combat where in his brief fight with Suho in the Pyramid Dungeon who had the strength of a Rank A at the time was pressured to the point of almost dying needing to use his reward to heal himself.
  • Immense Strength: Ammut possesses immense physical strength, as displayed by how he was able to nearly rip Randolph in half with just one punch and was able to leap high enough to reach a skyscraper in one leap.
  • Immense Durability: Ammut possesses immense durability, as he withstood the pain of being mutilated by Kandiaru and Tarnak. Due to the torture process where his body was broken and repaired over and over again, his body became larger and more resilient to the point where attacks from a A-Rank Hunter would not even scratch him, and he became so resistant to pain that he shows no weakness when injured.
  • Immense Speed: Ammut was faster than the A-Rank Hunters, and even Suho had difficulty keeping up with his attacks even with his stats enhanced by Gray's procession.
  • Enhanced Senses: Ammut, despite being blind, was able to perceive the environment and living beings around him thanks to his sharp senses, being able to fight against several opponents knowing their positions without needing to see them.
  • Iron Body Technique: It is a power that allows an individual to exceed the limits of their physical body and transcend into the realm of the soul, overcoming the laws of physics to directly attack a spiritual body with brute force.
  • Bloodlust: Ammut demonstrated the ability to intimidate the mummies guarding the tomb he was imprisoned in, forcing them to retreat in fear of him while Suho, with his heightened senses, felt the strong bloodlust emanating from him and felt chills.
  • Conversation: Ammut can speak in monster tongue.
  • Size Alteration: Ammut is able to shrink in size to the point of reaching human size but can never lose the weight as a side effect of what Kandiaru did to him.

Trivia[]

  • Ammut is named after the monster Ammit from Egyptian mythology, who was responsible for devouring the hearts of the dead if they were deemed unworthy during judgement.
  • Ammut's design is based on the god Sobek from Egyptian mythology, who takes the form of a man with the head of a crocodile.
  • Since the Pyramid Arc takes place earlier in the webtoon's storyline than it does in the novel's storyline, Ammut was not supposed to appear in the webtoon until much later.
  • Ammut's backstory in the webtoon differs from his backstory in the novel. In the novel, he was Tarnak's mentor and the one who raised him to become the Iron Body Monarch. However, in the webtoon, he was created by Tarnak and Kandiaru, and subsequently imprisoned for an undisclosed reason.
  • In the novel, Ammut was not abandoned in the pyramid by Tarnak as he was in the webtoon. Instead, he entered the pyramid by choice as part of the deal that he made with Kandiaru in order to become immortal. Unfortunately, before Ammut could gain the immortality that he desired, Kandiaru betrayed him and condemned him to the pyramid for all of eternity, where he would remain until he was freed by Suho.
  • In the novel, Ammut is not blind.
  • In the novel, Ammut train Suho by using gravitational magic as additional weight but in the webcomic, he simply demands Suho carry him.
