Demons are a race of vicious, animalistic magic beasts that hail from the Demon Castle. They were ruled by Baran, the Demon King and the Monarch of White Flames, and the vast majority of them were wiped out under his command during the first war with the Rulers.
Overview
Depending on how strong they are, demons come in various sizes and shapes. Demon nobles are about as small as humans and look a lot like them as well, while average demons can be as big as small buildings and look like animals. Although not always consistent, especially with nobles, demons generally have horns and red eyes.
History
Centuries ago, the demons fought in the war between the Monarchs and the Rulers at the behest of Baran, their king and master. At some point during this period of time, a large group of demons were suddenly transported to the Demon Castle by Kandiaru, with a strange voice in their heads ordering them to protect the castle from intruders at any cost.[1]
After Sung Jinwoo cleared the castle, the Radiru Clan, which was the only demon clan that he spared, effectively became the highest ranking clan in the castle. Later on, after the castle became unstable due to the Rulers' decision to reset the timeline with the Cup of Reincarnation, the Radiru Clan was granted sanctuary in the shadow dungeon.
Abilities
A demon's strength determines its level of intelligence. Average demons have animalistic levels of intelligence and thus behave like mindless beasts, while demon nobles have human levels of intelligence and are both dangerous and calculating fighters, with some even able to speak human languages. As explained by Esil, this can be a bad thing for demons themselves, as demons without intelligence are incapable of recognizing demons with intelligence as one of their own.[2]
Demon souls are known to contain contaminated mana. As a result, they are immune to effects of Shadow Extraction and cannot be revived as shadow soldiers.
Culture
Demon society is highly stratified, with a class of nobles on top. These nobles were organized into clans, each of which were ranked based on strength, and hierarchical disputes between them were very common. Before Jinwoo conquered the Demon Castle, there were at least twenty clans.
