Kanae Tawata (타와타 카나에) is a Japanese S-Rank Hunter and a member of the Draw Sword Guild.
Appearance
Kanae is a tall and slim young woman with long dark purple hair, red eyes, dark purple lipstick, and black fingernails. She has numerous black tattoos that cover her arms and the upper left half of her chest. When using her powers, her eyes glow red.
During her first appearance, she wore a purple baseball cap, a pink jacket, and black pants. During the Japan Crisis Arc, she wore her hair in pigtails and was dressed in a loose pink jacket that showed her midriff, black armored boots, and black baggy pants, with two katanas hanging from the left side of her waist.[1]
Personality
Kanae is a stern and serious individual who cares about the well-being of her teammates, as displayed when she yelled at Kumamoto to stop panicking during the Jeju Island Raid so that he wouldn't get himself killed. She is also hotheaded, as shown when she lost her patience with Hoshino when he wouldn't stop rambling about how they were doomed to perish against the Ant King and angrily complained about how she was essentially being left behind to clean up the corpses of the giants that were killed by Jinwoo's shadow army during the events of the Tokyo Crisis.
History
Jeju Island Arc
Four days before the 4th Jeju Island Raid was slated to take place, Kanae met up with the rest of the Jeju Island Raid Party inside the Korean Hunters' Gym. She participated in the 4v4 match between the two teams and faced off against Cha Hae-In, ultimately losing to Cha's superior speed.[2]
During the 4th Jeju Island Raid, Kanae was a member of Team Bravo alongside Kumamoto. After Teams Alpha, Charlie, and Delta were almost entirely annihilated by the Ant King, Kanae went to go search for survivors on Reiji's orders and eventually located Hoshino, the only surviving member from Team Alpha, propped up against the side of the building. When she asked him what happened, he started to babble about how they were doomed against the Ant King, angering Kanae and causing her to shove him aside.
Japan Crisis Arc
When a S-Rank Gate suddenly spawned in the heart of Tokyo, Kanae was brought in to help with the situation. Following the dungeon break and Yuri Orloff's death, she and Hoshino attempted to attack a giant, but the monster easily knocked them aside with its sword.
After Jinwoo arrived in Japan and his shadow army made short work of the giants, Kanae and Hoshino were left behind in the wreckage as the shadows headed towards Tokyo. Exhausted, Kanae plopped down onto the head of a dead giant and grumbled to Hoshino about how they were practically useless in the raid due to how weak they were.
Abilities
As a hunter whose abilities were recognized by Goto Ryuji, Kanae is quite strong for a S-Rank. However, at the same time, she was easily defeated by Cha Hae-In during their sparring match before the 4th Jeju Island Raid and was virtually helpless against the giants that invaded Japan during the Tokyo Crisis.
Etymology
- The name Kanae is written in hiragana (かなえ), which has no special meaning. However, when written in kanji, it could possibly mean a variety of different things.
- Kanae's surname Tawata means "many" (多) (ta), "harmony, peace" (和) (wa) and "field, rice paddy" (田) (ta).
Trivia
- Unlike in the webtoon, Kanae's armor shows some of her cleavage in the anime.
- In the localized Japanese versions of the anime and the webtoon, Kanae's name is changed to Kana (カナ).
