—The System to Sung Jinwoo, Episode 3 (Anime)

The System was a magical program that chose Sung Jinwoo as its Player after his first trip to the Double Dungeon.

History

D-Rank Dungeon Arc

During his first trip to the Double Dungeon, Jinwoo was chosen by the System to be its Player when he voluntarily decided to stay behind and sacrifice himself so that the rest of his raid party could leave alive. As he started to train with the System, Jinwoo discovered that it enabled him to grow stronger at an explosive rate and used this ability to his advantage, eventually rising up to become the strongest hunter in the world.

Double Dungeon Arc

When Jinwoo reached level 100, Kandiaru invited him back to the Double Dungeon so that the Shadow Monarch Ashborn could take control of him as his vessel and finally descend into the human world as they had originally planned. But unfortunately for Kandiaru, Ashborn had no intention of taking control of Jinwoo as his vessel and wished to transfer his powers instead to make Jinwoo his heir. As a result, he ultimately betrayed Kandiaru by locking him out of the System and bestowing his black heart to Jinwoo.[1]

Monarchs War Arc

When Rakan killed Jinwoo in battle, Ashborn was able to rejuvenate him through his black heart and transfer the rest of his powers to him. With the System having finally accomplished its purpose, it was then automatically deleted as Jinwoo was revived with the true powers of the Shadow Monarch.

Characteristics

The System was designed like a video game and provided Jinwoo with quests that offered unique rewards, a leveling system with different skills and stats, an unlimited inventory that Jinwoo could store all sorts of magical items in, and even an in-built store offering items for the in-game gold currency that Jinwoo obtained every time he killed an enemy in battle. It could also only be used by Jinwoo due to his status as Player and as a result, nobody else was able to see it.

As later revealed, the System was originally created by Kandiaru to help Ashborn create a human vessel strong enough to completely absorb his powers and use them to their maximum potential with no problems whatsoever. It was also deliberately designed with its video game interface so that Jinwoo could make sense of how it worked without any confusion.[2]

As the System was designed to make Jinwoo's body adapt to Ashborn's powers, it also tried to keep him alive as best as it could to ensure that he wouldn't die before that happened by activating his passive skills whenever he needed them and giving him quests to eliminate his enemies whenever he was up against an opponent who was trying to kill him. It would even warn him of the slightest murderous intent in his vicinity, as displayed when Goto Ryuji stopped playing around and attacked him with the intent to kill during the sparring match that they had shortly before the 4th Jeju Island Raid.[3]

Store

Shop

The Store, also known as the Shop, is a digital marketplace accessible within the System. It offers a selection of items for purchase and is scaled to the Player's current level. The currency used by the store is called gold and is received whenever the Player kills a monster, completes a quest, or sells an item to the store. For the items that the Player can buy, the store offers consumables (which can replenish health, mana, and stamina), equipment, and weapons, such as the Knight Killer dagger.[4]

Trivia

  • Due to the fact that Kandiaru designed the System only to be used by Ashborn and his human vessel, both the Monarchs and the Rulers were not aware of its existence or its capabilities. As a result, the Rulers were not able to utilize it for themselves to grow vessels strong enough to withstand the full might of their powers and the Monarchs remained oblivious to Ashborn's true intentions until their first confrontation with Jinwoo in the human world.
  • The items in Jinwoo's inventory could not be forcibly taken from him without his consent. There were also certain items in his inventory that were not transferable and could not be directly given to others, a fact that was displayed twice throughout the story.
    • The first time was during his battle with Igris; when Igris grabbed hold of Kasaka's Venom Fang and tried to use it against him, Jinwoo was able to quickly re-materialize the weapon back into his own possession.[5]
    • The second time was during the 4th Jeju Island Raid when Jinwoo attempted to heal his fellow Korean S-Rank Hunters using healing potions; due to not being able to make any transactions with them, he couldn't hand the potions to them and was forced to hold the potions up to their lips instead so that they'd be able to drink them.[6]
